EDF registration.

The European Data Format (EDF) is a simple and flexible format for exchange and storage of multi channel biological and physical signals.  It was developed by a few European 'medical' engineers who first met at the 1987 international Sleep Congress in Copenhagen. The result of this studies were published in 1992.

BRAINTRONICS has made a simple implementation of the EDF-format in the EEG-monitor for test purpose. The EEG-Monitor is a demo tool for evaluation of the BRAINBOX® amplifiers. The tool can used for the first tests with the BRAINTRONICS BRAINBOX® equipment. A new user can directly see the data from the BRAINBOX® amplifiers without use of analisys software.

The EEG-Monitor is not intended to use in a medical enviroment.

This special version of the EEG-Monitor can generate a EDF / EDF+ output file of the recording data. This function can also be test with the Virtual Amplifier if there is no hardware available.

The only problem during using the Virtual Amplifier is the time relation. The sample rate of the Virtual Amplifier is not exact so de EDF+ registration will get syncronisation problems by viewing the data with an external browser. The EDF registration works fine. A EDF+ registration with real hardware don't have this problem.

The EEG-Monitor has only the recording function for the EDF-format. It is not possible to re-view recording EDF/EDF+-files with the EEG-Monitor. Viewing of the EDF-data can be done with a shareware EDF/EDF+viewer

This version of the EEG-Monitor with EDF functionality can record only single channels. It is not possible to make a signal distraction.

The description for the EDF functionality of the EEG-Monitor contains the next parts.

Differents between EDF / EDF+

EDF A data file contains one uninterrupted digitized polygraphic recording. A data file consists of a header record followed by data records. The data records contain consecutive fixed-duration epochs of the polygraphic recording. (EDF specifications)

EDF+ A data file contains one or more digitized polygraphic recordings. In this mode non-contiguousness data streams can be handle. Not only signals but also annotations and events that are recorded during the same session can be kept safely together in one file. (EDF+ specifications)
